Sheila Elias' painting, "Two French Girls" on loan from an American art collector, is included in the current Riverside Art Museum exhibition. This artwork was previously exhibited in the Liberty show in 1986-87 at the NY Public Library and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs at the Louvre in Paris.
Curated by Peter Frank.

"The 1980s were a peak time for painting-everywhere, but notably in Los Angeles, which until then had never
really been a "painting town" (as, for instance, New York, San Francisco, and Berlin were). The emergence of a powerful and pervasive painterly style, neo-expressionismconstituting a loosely defined "return to the figure"- occurred at a moment in which a global artistic network had come to fruition." Substance in Turmoil, Flights of Mystery
by Robert C. Morgan

The art of Sheila Elias abounds with ideas and images flowering into a celebrative mode of authenticity.  Her paintings and recent digital photographs sustain an ecstatic momentum through the use of evocative forms and figures that suggest conflict, balance, and intrigue.  The bodily sensations revealed in her paintings and photographs moving through a weirdly tenuous pictorial space beckon all inhabitants on planet Earth to reclaim their destiny. In recent years, Elias’ work has involved people in flight, a musical rift through time and space. Her figures fall out of blue skies or skirt beside one another, fraught with emotion, often in a relaxed state of abandonment unencumbered by gravity.  Her complex digital images escape the realm of the rational. They hark back as much to Berlin Dada as to a quixotic style of figurative expressionism.  They hold fast to an apocalyptic aesthetic demeanor and a vernacular sense of being.

"Sheila Elias' new photography is a bold departure from the paintings for which she has been recognized as one of Miami's most important artists. Reflecting a perpetually curious and adventuresome mind, the combination of photographic and digitally applied imagery of Sheila's latest work fairly erupts off the surface with powerful undertones of a society in turmoil with the promise of redemption just over the horizon.

The glowing colors, sometimes feminist imagery, and sheer beauty of the work signal an important breakthrough for this artist at a significant moment in her career." - Tina Spiro.

AJJapour Gallery :: "Art With A View 5 | The American Dream"
January 2005

"Art l with a View l 5 –The American Dream pays homage to the quintessential dream sequence in "The Wizard of Oz."
The works displayed are referential rather than representational to the time-honored classic story of a young person on a spiritual journey to answer the unanswerable questions. Beyond the allegorical narrative, the Exhibition also explores the boundaries of safety in an increasingly complex world where the concept of what is safe and unsafe is blurred". A Japour.

Paris and The Louvre beckon
to Valley Artist and Lady Liberty

2 french girls

Two French girls and one from Tarzana are on their way
to Paris.

Actually, the French girls are two representations of the Statue of Liberty in a mixed-media painting called “Two French Girls.” The girl from Tarzana is Sheila Elias, who created the work. They’re going to Paris because Elias’ painting is included in an exhibit of art and memorabilia depicting Lady Liberty that opens at The Louvre Oct. 28.

Elias is one of the two contemporary American painters whose work was chosen for the exhibit. The Franco-American Committee, a group of French and United States citizens, organized the show to commemorate the Statue of Liberty’s 100th anniversary this year.
